Subject: Is the 5020 fuel sendor bad?

Mid-Missouri
I am trying to determine what ohm range the early serial number 5020 fuel sender. With the wire unhooked and v.m. set to ohms, one lead on screw, the other on sender body, I get no reading on v.m., nothing changes on the reading like the circuit is completely open. I have tried to v.m.'s. Am I doing this wrong or do I have a bad sender. Thanks.

If the sender, is this a deere part number only solution, or is it somewhat of an automobile style found more commonly elsewhere.
