Subject: Weedseeker as a Precision Sprayer Component?

I am looking ahead to 2015 when the California Dept of Pesticide Regulation might ban high VOC sprays.  One exmption is for precision sprayers as defined by NRCS.  Does the weedseeker system qualify?  The NRCS guy who is directly responsible for the following can not answer that question.   I know that the 20% reduction part depends on the field conditions.

  • The precision pest control application must provide at least a 20 percent reduction in VOC emissions over conventional application.

  • Precision pesticide spray technologies that have peer-reviewed research documentation of the VOC-reducing capabilities are eligible. Priority is for Photo ID and Sonar sensing-type technologies.

  • Not eligible are non-Photo ID targeting applicators, or spray nozzle, electro-static spray, open flame desiccation, or other lower spray technologies. Also not eligible are precision sprayer technologies already used on the property.

  • The land enrolled under the contract must be owned or in long-term control of the producer, be in cropland, and be part of a field that is currently being treated with VOC-containing materials. Use reports for the planned acres should be reviewed by NRCS as part of the EQIP application
