Subject: What is the deal with Fungicide on soybeans

frederick, MD

Decided to try some fungicides on soybeans.  Have some mild brown spot and other leaf problems in the lower canopy of 4 foot tall beans.  I dont see how fungicides can help any.  We cannot get the spray to go down through the canopy and cover the leaves that are infected.  Is there anything we can do to help.  We have tried flood jets at 35 gallons per acre and 50 psi, Flat fans, and AI. flat fans at high pressure also.  It seems the AI flat fans at 25 gpa and 50 psi are working the best, but the coverage in the lower canapy is still very poor.

Am I missing something?  Isnt coverage critical?  All the smart guys are running around talking up spray fungicides on soybeans.  Many are using a helicopter.  I do not see how a helicopter at 2-3 gallons per acre is going to get any coverage where we need it.
