Subject: When is rain too late to help corn?



Looks like we'll finally get a little shower today.  My corn leaves never rolled up, but July and August have been dry.  Leaves are now still mostly green.

My guess would be the grain will still benefit, as long as some of the plant is green.  Wouldn't the plant want to dedicate its last bit of energy to propagation, via seed, via grain fill?

Right now about 26,000/acre I'd estimate, the below ear is on the better side, 18x40 ... though there are also some doubles that have a little, which I don't count for the estimate.  The broken cob below, is from the top third and bottom third of the ear.  I guess more mature at the bottom end.
