Subject: Seed depth at planting

Central Illinois
We usually plant corn and soybeans 2' to 2-1/2" deep, unless it's dry and moisture is deeper. Last year when planting soybeans, we had 1 row I didn't get the depth control handle set properly and it popped out. This allowed the planter row unit to plant full depth. The soybeans did emerge, about a week later than the other rows. For years my Dad would tell me to plant 1-3/4" because of crusting after a hard rain. Out of the 39 crop years I have farmed, 1-3/4" planting depth was more of a problem than 2-1/2" planting depth.

How deep does everyone plant corn and soybeans?

What are your observations?
