Brandon, MS | Have a few cows that had late calves. Calves were born between first of June to first of July. Ofcourse the cows came back as open when I checked them last week.
I'm going to ditch the open cows. The question is, do I keep the calves or not? Calves weigh in the 300 - 350 lb range. The main reason to sell the pairs would be the calf would not get worse. Could get some money for the calf now.
Most of me says to keep the calf. The cows are 6 - 8 years old, and while they are in good shape, I'm afraid they'll sell by the pound just based off of how old they are. And if that's the case, I'd just assume split the pair myself as I would the sale barn split them.
If I keep them, the plan would be to put out one lick tub to get them through weaning. Then feed them a little and let them graze on rye grass all winter. And then in the spring have some 700 lb calves to sell. They're all black and all happen to be steers. | |
