Subject: Canola questions

Sanilac Co. Michigan
Just for starters, we don't grow canola in Michigan. Was tried in the late 80's and maybe early 90's with winter canola, but for a variety of reasons it just didn't take hold. Seemed like a good idea at the time....

Anyway, I'm kind of curious. Just what is canola worth in the US market? I read here somewhere that a guy averaged 1.75 ton and he thought that was pretty good, but that was Canadian prairie, I think, maybe NW Ontario, but how would that compare to northern corn belt environments?

I guess the other thing is input requirements, seed, fertilizer and herbicide. Is it more like a soybean budget, or more similar to small grains, or even corn?

The only thing that stuck with me, from my limited experience, was being told that if your combine could hold water it might be tight enough to hold canola because it'll find every crack, crevasse and hole to run out of.
