Went scouting the beans today. Most fields are near threshhold and will be sprayed as soon as the weather allows. Fields are still wet with all the rain we've been getting lately. Cultivation is behind and weeds are growing. I did see a lot of lady beetles, but I don't think they will keep up to the aphids. While finding lots of soybean aphids, I ran across a different kind of aphid. One, I'd like to keep around. These are dark colored aphids which seem to enjoy ragweed for lunch. They don't seem to like the soys, so that's OK with me. On our tour of the fields we came across a helicopter inspecting the powerline that runs across our farm. We stuck around to watch them do their thing and low and behold they decided to land on our driveway and have a chat with us. Don't see that every day. The pilot is a retired farmer and was curious about our beans I guess. The chopper is a "Eurocopter" . A $2.5 M dollar machine. They were geo regerencing the poles and inspecting the hangers. I didn't get to take a ride as I was muddy from walking in wet fields. Maybe next time . Anyways, just wanted to share.
