The breaker, if it’s functioning properly, will trip if there’s a short, no matter what the size of the wire. Could there be a problem where the added size of the breaker (to accommodate inrush) on wire “too small” for that breaker? Yes, but not too likely. It could happen with wire sized to the breaker just as easily.

Properly sized overloads are what truly protect a motor and ultimately the wire from overheating damage in a motor circuit, not the breaker.
