Motors are to be wired on dedicated circuits and wire is sized according to NEC related to horsepower. Nameplate should get you there though. Breaker should be oversized to allow for the massive startup in rush. Motor should have the proper overload protection which is why breaker can be oversized.

At least that is how it was explained to me.
