The heater strips on magnetic starter should allow for starting load. The wiring should match the breaker, or better yet fuses as they do not change value. Number 6 wire is rated for 50 amps, if cooper and not in enclosed area. 4 would get you 10 more amp rating. Alum wire needs to be one size larger, I would avoid it. Cost might make a difference to you. I do not have a chart in front of me ] as to the distance. Your supply house should be of help. Little rusty since most of our loads are three phase.
On motor loads the wiring is sized for the max amp rating of the motor as are the heater strips. The breaker is typically up to double the max amp rating to allow for starting.
