Subject: Demo'd a rotary rake this week

Just thought I would post an update on the question I posted a couple weeks ago on speeding hay drying. Friday afternoon we demo'd a Kuhn GA 4120 single rotor rotary rake and while we didn't see a half a day decrease in drying time like Kuhn claims is possible it did seem to speed the drying and produced a much more constant moisture in the windrow. As luck would have it the day we demo'd the rake was the best drying day of the year, sunny, 80 ° with low humidity and 15-20 mph winds and I would have liked to have had a poor drying day to test it but it was the last hay of the year for us so we didn't have much choice.

We were impressed enough with the rake that we ended up buying it and I think that when we go to a disk mower conditioner next year (steel on steel rolls) to crimp the stems the rotary rake will work even better. I do think that in alfalfa the rotary rake is gentler on the hay than either the wheel or bar rakes we've ran in the past.
