Centre county Pennsylvania, USA | Soil type was not listed because I'm not sure what it was and didn't want to mislead the folks at Penn State by guessing. It was one of those last minute rental deals so we didn't have much time to do homework before planting. It's defiantly limestone based and appears to be loam of some kind with limestone outcrops and ridges. Although the soil test says Centre county that farm is actually in northern Huntingdon county. That area did not have significant drought stress this year so maybe that's one reason why corn recovered after heavy dose of side-dress N ?
The only (non-Amish) animal farming remaining in this area are dairy and they don't sell (or give away) manure. No poultry farms within affordable trucking distance. |
