Muleshoe, TX | Flylow is right. Organic is just a marketing tool. As for the waste of resources, I can see how this can be perceived. However, it should come back to dollars of return to the farm. I grow pumpkins that are going to sit on someone's front porch for a month and then get thrown in the dumpster. Is this a waste of resources? In my eyes it is because I use a lot of precious fossil fuels to irrigate and fertilize this crop. But when you look at the dollars I am returning to my farm, it is a lot less of a waste of resources than the cotton and corn I am growing and "giving" away as a cheap commodity.
When the economy goes south, or there is a food shortage, marketing tools such as organic, or decorative items will become essentially worthless because people will be focused solely on surviving. I have to say that our society is a long long way from reaching this point | |
