Belleville, Ontario | I agree with Ed, pushing the seeding rate up reduces tillers, making for more even maturity. If you look at the tillers, they have smaller kernels, they flower later opening you up to a longer window for fussarium and they sometimes have no kernels at all! there have been fellows with as high as 2.5 million seeds/ac. Do a plot for yourself to decide the right seeds/ac for your situation. If it is bin run, sending for a germ and vigor test is wise, and you get the 1000 kernel weight too from the lab. Variables like planting speed and condition of the drill also change the rate of seed you should lay down.
