You have to remember that family is typically not democratic and as such fair market does not cross minds, only fair. I look around here in Ontario and see the average cash rent in my area is around 160-180/ac, this is what it should bring on the open market, what it is worth is more like 80-90/ac. Families are more apt to see what things are worth and what is fair rather than what is the best way to turn a profit, if they were looking for profit I'd wager that the majority of our parents would have left agriculture in the 80's and none of us young bucks would have any chance at starting farming.
