In the old days, we'd let the third or fourth cutting (depending on rain) grow up and mouldboard it under for manure. Next Spring, we'd plant Corn and not even think about fertilizer. After Corn, we'd plant Beans for a year. Then seed it down again.

Nowdays, my guess would be to burn it down after one cutting and go Beans or Wheat.
