Boomer, the recommendation for stems is about 45-50/ sq ft. If you get below 45, you should really be thinking about killing it down and starting over. 10-13 stems/ sq ft is really low.

My first response is I would plant corn. For some reason, I am not excited about killing alfalfa down and planting wheat. However, since you don't have corn equipment, I would rethink planting corn. Around here, some guys kill down alfalfa fields and plant soybeans - some even take a 1st cutting off and do that. I am not sure I would recommend going that route. I would consider fall-killing the sod, and planting soybeans in the spring, then follow with wheat, and seeding alfalfa after wheat is harvested. This is another option to consider...... and it would give you a little more rotation time between alfalfa crops.
