I believe they were referring to as you pointed out above a 16/32 or 16/31 "splitter" planter used to plant the beans.
In both cases the beans would be in 15" rows. After looking at the SF photos I think most of the bean pictures were of 15" beans with one of them at 30".
A stupid question
