Gary Edwards Anamosa, Iowa | The perfect spacing for soybeans is a 5.5" square; however, I don't know anyone who plants their beans that way. Narrow rows will generally out yield wide rows, but not always. Wide rows are better when white mold is a problem and possibly if soybean rust becomes a problem. Narrow rows canopy faster so are better with a post herbicide program. Population has very little to do with drought tolerance. You may save a little on seed costs, but you will not affect yield. Other than that the soybean plant can recover from a multitude of sins, so it is up to what ever the operator feels most comfortable with.
