 West Tennessee | I'd suggest you get a couple of hand helds to use and be sure you like them. For us there were too many problems. I'm sure a lot of people wouldn't have all of these problems but following were some that we had. Batteries go dead if not kept charged and you can't simply leave the older ones on the charger for days (may be different for new ones). They are EASILY dropped or otherwise ill treated (buttons messed up antennaes bent, etc.) They hang on things and get "messed up". Awkward to carry the bigger ones on your belt all day. Range is not terribly good unless you go on a repeater.
For us a bb radio in each piece of equipment and trucks solved all of the above problems. We are not on a repeater and so do not incur recurring expenses. If my combine operator is outside the combine and needs to talk to me, he uses his cell phone that I reimburse him for. Same with the truck drivers because they are seldom in range of the bb radios, and they don't move with the slower equipment, so they don't normally have one in their truck. | |
