Maybe look at the roots and stems of the surrounding plants, it may give some insight to what is going on. I find plants easiest to diagnose when they are half dead, not totally gone. The lightening deal was the first to pop into my head, but more research is needed. I'm not sure if the gov't may do the test for SCN for free for you, as it would be a big find.
