| Dan, Mechanically manipulating soil will 'improve' aeration over the short term, but invariably leaves the soil more compacted, with less OM, and with more susceptibility to damage by raindrop impact. I do not know of any exceptions to this fundamental. If you struggle with vigor of crops in high-residue low-disturbance situations, I would strongly encourage experimentation with cover crops (reference previous discussions here and on Ag Online, especially involving "smackdab" in that forum) to dry the soil and allow more rapid warming. Also, be sure to use high-quality high-vigor seed, probably with fungicide treatment for your conditions. Be mindful of your nutrient levels, since cool soils pose additional problems to plant root uptake as well as adding further stress to the plant itself. |
