Wow, that is short-never really thought about it because cutting that short would be near to impossible on most places but I'm surprised it doesn't hurt the plants. Alfalfa is really an amazing plant to be able to regrow as well as it does. I wonder what the difference in yield is for a 1" versus 3" stubble.

Even on our flattest, laser leveled fields I don't think you could get a nice clean cut that low, esp. jumping over checks and rough along ditches or pivot tracks. The ground around here holds an amazing amount of water, some flood ground gets 2-3 irrigations for 4 cuttings of alfalfa. Sometimes, like when your trying to dry hay, that is a real curse when all that moisture comes out of the ground. I think a couple inches of stubble is probably good for holding the hay up out of the dirt and keeping a little air space underneath the windrow.
