Subject: RE: Keeping field edges clean

Penobsquis, New Brunswick, Canada
when we plant we leave an outside strip for inspection purposes in each field. we use this strip to carve back any over hanging trees, as a laneway to other fields and to inspect that crop plus it keeps the combine out from the fencerow - drier crop and no need ofr a backswath. we maintain this 2 ways - with an offset bushcutter to keep the fencerow from growing out into the field and a cultivator on a small tractor to keep the weeds in check. repeated cultivation in succeeding years just as the weeds are about to bloom will wear out the weed seed bank and soon it is only grass. being organic requires this technique.

my 2 cents for what they are worth
