Floyd County, Iowa | It's a tradition of my family, too. Every Christmas Eve as long as I can remember, we had oyster soup, smoked oysters on crackers, and pickled herring. My wife continued to make it for me when we got married, and has been doing it for 50 years. One of our daughters likes oyster soup but not the smoked oysters, and the other daughter likes them smoked but not the soup. That leaves the herring for me.
Wife used to make us liver and onions, cut thin, breaded in flour, fried in butter, and cooked thoroughly. I didn't mind it, but it wasn't my favorite. She hasn't made it since 1983. | |
