On my 40 series. I used to fill from bottom but a job to remove the shields. I now fill from the top. I have leaky seals and need to add grease about every day to some. I just put the grease gun tip down and rest it on the gear. Pump on the way out to get in as much as possible.
No gearbox issues ever in 45 years on doing this.
