To start with, manufacturers design for lowest cost: least amount of metal( within demands for strength/durability), and lowest cost of production, which includes cutting, bending/shaping, & welding. In your picture, what would be the point of John Deere running the horizontal rails back to a vertical leg to the spindles? -certainly would not increase strength, and would increase cost. The only reason for doing that would be to provide a platform for some addendum equipment: tank for liquid, or a hopper.
Best thing to do is to visit equipment dealers & look at how manufacturers are doing it.
