Subject: RE: Kubota rtv 900 engine head

You have a D902 in that right? We lost the rear main oil seal in the D902 that is in my Toro Z-master last fall, my son was running it and by the time he noticed it and shut it down it has lost nearly all the oil................Anyhow I thought we were good after replacing the seal, but it lasted one more mowing(Final one for the season ironically) and on the last pass I was running it and it started knocking. Drained the oil and it had glitter in it. Tore it down and found #2 was starved and worn the main out, and it finally spun causing the knocking. I actually tried to buy OEM Kubota parts for it, needed a crank, rod, bearings, and gasket set as the major things, along with a few minor things. One local Kubota dealer had zero interest, didn't even bother looking and sent me to the Toro Commercial dealer and they looked at me and said, "We get those parts from them?" but they weren't interested because they said the price would be astronomical. Also tried another Kubota dealer that is quite large and sells other major lines too, the route salesman who I buy quite a bit from said he would check with the others back at the dealership as he wasn't up on Kubota himself.....................He called me and said they told him it being in a zero turn of another maker the parts were different and they didn't want any part of it.............Ok, looked like I was on my own. Ended up buying a complete kit for a excavator and UTV 902 off ebay, it included the gasket set, pistons/sleeves, bearings, and seals. Ordered a crank from another seller, and finally a set of rods since it was cheaper to buy 3 than one. Parts came and I compared everything..................everything was a direct match, so much for the parts being different. Got everything cleaned up, put it back together using everything except the sleeves/pistons/rings since the old was just fine. Got it back in the mower, and it fired right up......................probably going on 60 hours on it now, zero issues. Moral of this story I am getting to is Kubota really doesn't seem to want to sell rebuild parts in my experience, they prefer to sell fluids and filters, and then replace the machine if anything somewhat serious occurs. And with that said, the aftermarket stuff isn't bad at all, and in your case I wouldn't be scared to try a head if you need one. I had around $600 in parts for my engine, along with my time. Who knows what a new diesel zero turn would be these days had I went with what I was told by the OEM.
