| Hello again,
I made a post a few months back about potentially leaving my career in the Air Force and switching to something agriculture related.
First off, thank you all for the advice and kind words. I appreciate it. I know I mentioned I’d come back to that post in a few days and answer any questions but work ended up taking precedence shortly thereafter and I completely forgot about it.
Since then I have talked to a some of my friends around the U.S. as well as a career advisor and have kicked around a few ideas with my wife.
There are open positions for my rank/skill level/AFSC at bases in all three of the states listed in the title. At this point in my career I’m fully aware that “needs of the Air Force” might assert itself and we could be assigned somewhere else entirely but those states are often considered “less desirable”(no offense, that’s not my opinion but it’s often how it’s phrased when everyone wants overseas, Florida, California, etc). So “fingers crossed” we could PCS to one of those locations if talk to the right people.
Going to one of these duty stations would allow me to stay in the military full time until I can retire and receive a pension(as well as guard/reserve units I could transfer to) while hopefully having the opportunity to buy a property of our own. I could also use my days off and vacation time to work part time on a farm.
So, before my wife and I go to far down this path I have about 60 days of banked leave I need to “use or lose” and we’ve decided to take the family on a little vacation and fly in from our current duty station to visit their grandparents in Virginia and then hopefully take an extended road trip through those states and visit some of the bases and potentially find a place to call home long term.
If anyone living in those states could please chime in and give us some insight as what life is like there? Ag job market? Would any one state be better to settle down in and hopefully enjoy life at a slower pace? Anything we should try to see while we’re there? Thanks
