Subject: RE: Rural school enrollment?

North East Wimmera district of Victoria.

My Dad and his siblings walked 2.5 miles to the school I then attended in 1950. think about 25 - 30 pupils in Dad's day
2 sisters - older then me - rode ponies to same school, late 1940's onwards.
Ponies were gone by time I started  - one sister and I rode pedal bikes same 2.5 miles. 18 pupils Older sister went to local High school, boarded in town 20 km from home.  Middle sister and I went by bus daily to High school. Older sister had moved to Melbourne to boarding school, then Uni.
1970 our kids attended same school - driven there mostly! - pupils down to 10 - 12.  Then when middle of our family of three 1971,1974,and 1977 needed High school [above grade 6] he and 3 same age boys from other families left, the school was closed for lack of numbers [ down to 6 pupils].
As another commented - farms were sold to neighbours, thinning 'family farms' - forcing school closures.
Local town High School is suffering the same ''dropping numbers" problem.  Used to be 300 pupils, now under 100!
