Subject: RE: Challenger 975E information

Jeffersonville, OH
I have only been around a few, but other than being a nightmare to work on because of their being 4 turbo's strapped on top the thing, I've never heard of too many MAJOR issues. Some, sure, but I'm sure some C18's failed along the way too, but it's not like every one of the V12's fell apart at 2500 hours either. Do people love them, not always...I think the most common issue with them was the fan belt drives?

My take, if you owned and drove one with a C18 you're never going to be happy with anything less than a C18...but if you came from anything else, the power was fine, and you were happy enough. It's still a 16.8L engine, bigger than anything else ever used in a tractor other than the C18 and KT Cummins. The beauty of the C18 is in it's displacement, and reliability, because you just can't get torque like that out of any engine...plus at that displacement even tuned it's only barely working in a farm application.

What's the Marine power ratings on the C18, 1100+ hp I think? I was on a lobster boat last summer that the guy had 21K hours on his C18 which I think he said was 1100hp, but that he was starting to notice a few things that had him thinking about having it overhauled or replaced. I told him I thought it probably earned a freshening by the way he used it LOL
