I always felt the groove is there so in case bushing would spin grease can still make it thru hole to the pin. There are some bushings with no groove so alignment is obviously important on those. I have torched a second hole 180 degrees from original on grooved ones just to get grease to both sides of pin and to stop them from not taking grease.
