We usually seed about 20-30ac a year with a cone spreader. Either early/mid April or mid Aug.
Work ground, roll 1-2x, seed, then roll 1-2x. Firm seedbed is key. Any time we've skipped rolling the stand is poor.
Crude but it works for us.
