You're killing the highest yield potential plants that are out there. Here's some data to back it up. 80k or spiked in various existing stands were all better than ripping it up and starting over with any of the replant seeding rates attempted. 

Red box has the rip up and replant rates and yield. Yellow arrows are adding various amounts of seed to varying existing stands, all did the same or better than the full replant.
