We will over plant in a high yield situation like yours if we have less than 70K stand or if there are large gaps in stand.

Our preference would be exactly as your describe - we will go in with a shorter maturity and plant over the whole field if necessary. We are 15" rows so we destroy some of the original stand, with 30's it seems you can just move over a few inches. Personally I want to keep the whatever of the original stand is still there since they have the highest yield potential.

Last year we over planted a poor stand of 3.7's with a 3.0, actually 2x with last planting near end of May and they ended up in the mid 80's so I would call that a success.
