Grab a handful of soil from as deep as you’re going to til or 2 inches deep if you’re talking planting. Make a ball in your hand, push the soil out between your thumb and your index finger. If you can make a ribbon over an inch long it’s too wet. If you can’t make a ribbon at all it’s quite dry. Your soil may be different, but that’ll give you an idea… Dennis



That is similar to what I always heard: make the ball, and if it crumbles in your hand, it's good to go.

Along with what Cliff said below, on the first of June, throw the ball at something, and if it doesn't stick, it's good to go.
