Most don’t know or care how they achieve octane ratings anyway or what is in their fuel. Except for E85. That had to be kept separate from the rest. We can probably blame oil companies for part of the confusion. Coincidence? Probably not.
I agree the labels should have been octane ratings and nothing more. The 100% "gasoline" pumps do not list every individual component that it contains, so why bother stating that it contains ethanol when you ignore disclosing the other ~150 components that make up a gallon of "regular" gasoline?
I'm also of the belief that the ethanol industry would be better off if E85 would have never been marketed and all of those pumps had E30 in them instead.
