Eastern NE KS | Through the winter if I see a large bird flying overhead but still long way away, it is a bald eagle. I look again an realize the wingspan IS GREATER than a turkey buzzard.
Bald eagles have visited the farm for 10-15 years. This happens ever few weeks. They first returned to the Kansas River 15 years earlier than that. Their hunting grounds have expanded from there and includes our pond. It is quite exciting to see one pluck a fish from the pond. I witnessed that action a month ago and wish I had a picture to share but it happened too quickly. The bird was quite relaxed about rising above the water.
One spring I saw a couple roosting in a cottonwood below the pond dam. That lasted 2 mornings then they were gone. I suppose my tractor noise drove them away. The tree and my path were just 20-30 yards apart.
