Near Intersection of I-35 & I-90 Southern Mn. | Again thanks for all the replies. I had heard of the Bon-Ami trick but forgot about it. Some 50 years ago, I had a Summer job with a road construction outfit. The procedure was to lay down a layer of lime on the roadbed and then come along with a self-propelled road tiller. It was really just a garden tiller on a gigantic scale. It had a large Deutz engine as I recall.
It had gotten to the point where it was using excessive oil. They threw in some Bon-Ami. I don't remember the outcome.
Some years ago, I owned a small airplane with a friend. It needed an engine overhaul based on time in service. The rings didn't seat properly. Someone suggested the Bon-Ami trick but we were hesitant to try it with an airplane. A tractor or road tiller on the ground is one thing but purposely putting an abrasive in an airplane engine seemed a bit risky.
The place that did the airplane overhaul turned the engine over with an electric motor to check for oil leaks rather than actually running it. Others in the know thought that was a bad idea. |
