West Central Illinois | Not worth near as much with that high of stocking rate year-round, need a way to allow forage to rest 45 days between grazes to let the grass recover and get rooted down well. Assuming you have even # of animals from 1250 to 600 lb you have almost 65 animal units (1,000 lb of animal) on only 30 acres so only 0.46 acres/hd which is very low.
This was earlier this winter but i dug in to do some figuring based off of the nutrient value of hay comparatively to commercial fertilizer with the added nitrogen from the manure/urine it came out to around $0.60 cents per day per 1000 lb animal unit in a winter hay feeding scenario. Lots of variables to this depending on situation and this was before the recent run-up in fertilizer. I did not factor in anything for the micronutrients (zn, cu, mn, etc.) or the increased organic matter as that's hard to assign a value to since it's not commmercial available like N, P and K. | |
