I was watching a news show last night. I don't recall which one. It doesn't really matter.  They had 2 pilots in a simulator talking about this crash. The one pilot made a recommendation at the end.  His recommendation: when emergency vehicles are on the runway, have all planes go around.  Make this standard protocol.  Don't allow planes to land or takeoff while emergency vehicles are on the runway area. I think a second part to this would be hold all emergency vehicles until all planes actually landing are cleared off the runways.

I am no pilot, not an expert.  However, this idea sounds like it is worth exploring. See how it would work "on the ground". At the very least, it is worth a discussion.

This is the actual timeline of how quickly this mishap occurred. There was no time to coordinate a go around. And the CRJ thrust reversers were already engaged in the eight seconds between touchdown and the collision- even if the crew had seen the truck with time to react (I’d estimate they had one second) they no longer had speed and thrust to go flying again. Any attempt at an emergency climb would only have resulted stalling the jet and mass casualties of the passengers.
