Many years ago when Dad built houses, we would sod the front and side yards and then box blade the back yard so we could rake the rocks and clods out, seed heavy with cheap rye grass and deeply cover with wheat straw.
Water everything for days at a time till the straw was soaked. Always had to mow the backs before closing the sale.
