I start my tomato plants from seed.  The seed packet - and the information in the seed catalog tells you whether a tomato variety is determinate or indeterminate.  

If you buy tomato plants at a garden store, I would expect the labels would tell you if it determinate or indeterminate. IF it does not, then Google the variety name, and you should find information on that variety.
