A lot of what you said makes sense. One thing I will add is that had these things been built 50 years ago the water and power usage wouldn’t have drawn attention. Modern society has been conditioned to believe that it is our personal water and energy usage that is destroying the environment. We have continuously been told that we need to use less to save the world. Now these data centres are being built within a population that has been forced to switch to low flow toilets and showers and all kinds of “energy efficient” devices to “save the planet. It really is no wonder that people are concerned about the energy and water usage of those data centres and are wondering why the environmentalists seem to be looking the other way for those data centres. We have personally been under scrutiny for many years already.
FWIW I agree with you about the “educated” people’s knowledge of the water cycle. Actually the issue is almost certainly caused by the modern tendency of people getting into positions of power based on who they know rather than what they know or they are some form of DEI hire.
This type of thing happens with many issues. The people at the top have the loudest voices but often don’t actually know what they are talking about and/or if they do they will speak opposite of their own knowledge out of necessity to further their own career.
