Driftless SW Wisconsin

Hi Tim, the bull won't go in until July but I like to get the heifers treated early for a couple reasons.

#1 is that they were in with a half brother bull calf all winter, up until about 3 weeks ago. They are probably all bred since I no longer see the riding etc behavior I did earlier and they all needed a timely lute shot to get un-bred. My Herefords tend to be early-maturing and very fertile.

As long as vet is here now in addition to the lute they also get a 7-way, local pinkeye, Bovi-Shield and poured. This year vet is using Cydectin. As I recall he alternates Cydectin with Ivermectrin every other year. They also got bangs shot and tagged which helps if I decide to sell some as breeding stock.

#2 I like to use the more effective live vaccine as long as they are not bred. Spring is a good window when they are open, or will be soon.

We are fortunate in this still strong dairy area to have a number of very good veterinarians, for both large and small animals. The one I use charges very fair rates and he is good. One key point is having a good, if simple, working facility so he can get in, do his job, and get out without having a rodeo. Cattle are all in the corral and ready to go when he gets here. I think he also likes working on my pretty mild mannered Herefords.

I don't use vitamin shots as each group has its own Mineral-lyx barrel.
