Yes, really have to have a fuel spray AND a source of ignition to get jet fuel to make a big ball of fire. That’s not unusual in a crash but certainly not guaranteed.

When it does occur, it’s frequently bad because there’s almost always a LOT of fuel available. Sometimes a saving grace is if a wing breaks off, it takes fuel tanks with it. it’s a common design choice to put fuel tanks in the wings so as they’re depleted, the weight and balance doesn’t change as much as if tanks were somewhere else.
