Canadian news reported "ground crew (fire, ect.) is separate from air traffic controllers and they don't use same radio frequency" ..fwiw I would be like swne posted at least take a look both ways before crossing a live runway..Like school buses/tankers always stop at RR crossing..Tragic no matter who was in the wrong
Ground traffic generally has a different frequency from aircraft traffic. Depending on the size of the airport, there could be multiple channels for different things. Aircraft approach, aircraft ground, vehicles. All of our equipment has aircraft radios installed so we can monitor aircraft traffic in addition to our regular radios that we contact the tower on. And again, depending on the size of the airport, there could be one person manning both radios or there could be multiple. I suspect there should have been several in the tower at this airport.
Another thing I thought of, just because they have their emergency lights on doesn't mean they are responding to an emergency. We use them any time we are on the airfield. Other airports have yellow lights only for normal traffic, emergency lights just for emergencies. Depends on local protocol. And the lights are more for the tower to spot you than the aircraft. They have enough to do without looking for vehicles. They have to trust that when the tower gives them clearance, they are clear. |
