E.Central MN | My brother bought an electric plenum heater with off-peak capability thru the electric coop. The coop called a few months after the new smart meter was installed and said the meter wasn't showing any off-peak power draw. When they installed the "donut" sensor on the power wire that went to the heater, it was installed wrong and the off-peak meter was actually reading backward. The regular meter was still working correctly. There are sections on the meter that monitor different functions related to the power supply. When there is a power outage, the lack of signals from the smart meters allows the electric provider to determine the scope of the outage rather than relying on customers to notify them. | |
