C IL | My wife came home a month ago from teaching school. Said a kid told her she was going on vacation for two weeks, what did she need to make up? School policy would be that she had exceeded her unexcused absences and would get zeroes for missed work. Counselor told student it was fine and to ask teachers. So, what position do you take as classroom teacher? Enforce district policy, defer to counselor, refer issue to principal? All caused by parent decisions.
I strongly believe parents should be responsible for child education and school is just a partner is that, and that there are many educational opportunities outside of the school curriculum, and I understand Disney or whatever is cheaper off-season but where do you put your foot down as teacher and school district? These are real questions and of course the district student reimbursements depend on them as well, which shouldn’t narrowly steer decisions but this is real life here. |
